PHILBRICK-CRICENTI BOG
Rhodora in June, picure
by Ruth White
Because a true bog has no inlet or outlet and we have an outlet under Newport Road (map), our bog is considered a poor fen. It is possible , however, to find most bog plants here. Bogs start to wake up in April as buds turn into leaves and the Marsh Marigold blooms. May is an excellent time to see Leatherleaf, Bog Rosemary, Rhodora and Pale Laurel. Pitcher Plants, Calla Lilies, Small Cranberries and Sheep Laurel welcome the June visitor. The orchids come in July as does the Horned Bladderwort. August brings the berries of the Mt Holly and the Small Cranberry. The red of the Winterberry announces the arrival of September and the Wild Raisin fruit turns black. The golden tones of the Tamarack make the bog glow in October and although the bog seems asleep during the cold months, nature is just resting for the spring renewal of life.
