Tamarack - A deciduous conifer, the Larch or Tamarack, will soon drop its leaves. As the chlorophyll fades in the green needles, the bog will seem to glow with golden tones. Grouse and rabbits regularly browse on the larch leaves; the deer prefer the tender branches. The wood is resistant to weather and soil exposure and has been used for utility poles and railroad ties. The shallow roots are strong and fibrous. Native Americans used these fibers to sew their birch bark.
